Please
find attached the NJDOH vector-borne surveillance report for week 39.
Report
highlights:
- To date, there have been
28 WNV human cases reported in 11 counties. There are 8 confirmed cases (1
fatality) reported in Bergen (2), Burlington (1), Camden (2), Essex (1),
Gloucester (1), and Somerset (1); 20 probable cases in Bergen (1),
Burlington (5), Camden (3), Cumberland (1), Essex (3), Middlesex (1),
Ocean (1), Monmouth (4), and Mercer (1) counties, awaiting confirmatory
testing; and 3 asymptomatic viremic blood donors reported in Burlington
and Monmouth (2) counties. In a typical year, there are 8 human WNV cases
reported. Reports of human cases have increased starting on week 34.
- West Nile virus (WNV)
has been detected in 14 mosquito pools so far this week and to date, 932
pools have tested positive for WNV. WNV activity this season has exceeded
5-year averages and has been detected in all counties except Salem but has
been decreasing starting in week 35. WNV has also been detected in 6
birds.
- 25 pools have tested
positive for EEE in southern N.J., which is higher than the same period in
2020, but is consistent with 5-year averages. The variety of mosquito
species that have tested positive, however, is of concern. There have been
no EEE human cases but 3 EEE positive horse cases reported in 2021.
- To date, 6 pools have
tested positive for JCV and 1 human case was reported earlier this season
in Sussex County.
